Illustrative packaging concept. Final structure and fit depend on the product.
In brief
An insert should support the contents, keep items separated where needed and allow them to be removed easily. Select its construction around the product and the complete packaging system.
What you will learn
- Distinguish separation from product support.
- Prepare an insert layout brief.
- Check the packed arrangement before approval.
Decide what the insert must do
A divider separates items into compartments. A fitted insert locates or supports a product through its shape. One structure can perform both tasks, but separation by itself does not establish cushioning or transit protection.
Describe the risk you need to address: bottles touching, a heavy item moving, an accessory getting lost or an uneven presentation. This gives the supplier a useful design problem.
Plan the arrangement around the products
Provide dimensions and weight for every item, including wrapping. Identify surfaces that must stay visible and features that should not carry pressure, such as a delicate cap or printed label.
Leave a practical way to remove the product. A compartment that holds an item securely can still frustrate the recipient if there is no finger access or easy lifting point.
Review material and construction together
Paperboard and corrugated constructions can be folded or cut into supports, but suitability depends on grade, geometry and the packed load. Ask the supplier to explain how the proposed insert holds each item and where its support comes from.
Do not assume a material is recyclable in every location because it is paper-based. Coatings, attachments and local collection rules matter. Request a confirmed material description before making disposal claims.
Check assembly and the complete pack
Trial the insert with the actual products. Check loading, removal, closure and whether repeated assembly causes snagging or crushing. The insert must fit the box as well as the contents.
If the pack will be shipped, assess the complete packaging system under its expected handling conditions. A tidy display on a table does not show how it will perform in delivery.
Send a clear insert brief
- Photographs, dimensions and weights for all items.
- A preferred layout and the surfaces to display.
- Box internal dimensions or a sample of the proposed structure.
- Delivery method, quantity and assembly requirements.
Key takeaways
- Specify the support or separation task before selecting a material.
- Check product removal as well as fit.
- Approve the insert as part of the complete packed box.
Frequently asked questions
Can one insert accommodate several product sizes?
Sometimes, but a shared layout must support each version without creating excessive movement or pressure. Provide all versions and have the arrangement checked before approval.
